This Canada Day, I’m feeling torn. I’m sure you’ve heard the conversation - we’re spending an awful lot of money on big parties and there is so much work to be done in this country, specifically in our Indigenous communities. Canada 150 marks 150 years since this land was stolen from Canada’s original owners, much of which was unceded; 150 years of disgusting treatment. If we took the $500M we’re spending on a party and put it towards say, clean drinking water on reserves, I think everyone would be in much better shape.
With all of that said, I do still have things to grateful for. There are many things that make me proud to be Canadian - things that when I look to other places in the world, make me feel very, very lucky to live in this country.
The main thing I love to celebrate in Canada, well, you guessed it - is our musicians. We’ve got some kick ass ones and I love being a Canadian musician - I think I say this every year. I’ve made a playlist that I hope you’ll give a listen to - it’s got a lot of great acts in the genres I kind of move around in and features some heavy-hitters, some social commentators, some underrepresented artists, some superstars, and some of my favourite local acts too. I hope you’ll listen to the lyrics - a lot of these songs were chosen for that specifically. No matter how you’re celebrating or not celebrating, I hope you’ve got some great music with you.
